Sport & Leisure Activities on Koh Phangan

sport_leisure_phangan_online.jpg
Koh Phangan is famous for its beaches and laid-back atmosphere. However, if your idea of the perfect holiday is something more than simply sitting on a beach then there are lots of activities to keep you occupied during your stay here, ranging from kayaking to elephant trekking.

Diving is especially popular, and it's no wonder with some of the best diving and snorkeling spots anywhere in the gulf of Thailand within easy reach and several local schools offering good value courses. There are plenty of watersports on offer including wakeboarding, jet-skiing and the most recent (and perhaps most exciting) addition, kiteboarding. Thai Boxing is also popular with several stadiums on the island. You can also get involved yourself, with most of the stadiums also offering training facilities and courses for those who want to learn themselves.

Whatever your age or interests, with such a wide range of sport and leisure activities available on the island you are sure to find something you will enjoy.

  • Boxing Stadiums   ( 4 Articles )
Thai Boxing, or Muay Thai has a long history in Thailand and is the country's national sport. It is known as "the art of eight limbs" due to the fact that the hands, elbows, knees and shins are all used, in contrast with western boxing where only the hands are used.

There are several Muay Thai stadiums in Koh Phangan with several fights every week and it's well worth a visit as it's an amazing spectacle. It's not quite on the same scale as somewhere like Lumphini (championship stadium in Bangkok) but nevertheless is still a great night out if it's your sort of thing. Drinks are always available.

Most stadiums also offer training if you wish to try it yourself.

Koh Phangan and its surrounding areas are a haven for dive enthusiasts. Along with the vibrant coral reef which extends around much of the island (especially the west coast) there are some world-class dive sites in the region which are accessible by way of a short boat trip.

Although less famous for diving than the smaller neighboring island of Koh Tao, Koh Phangan has several well established and certified dive schools and is an excellent place to practice the sport. Whether you are learning from scratch as a beginner, improving your skills or aiming for one of the top-level PADI qualifications, you are sure to find your diving experience in Koh Phangan a rewarding and memorable experience!

  • Paintball   ( 1 Article )

Paintball is a game in which players eliminate opponents by hitting them with pellets containing paint (referred to as a "paintball"), usually propelled from a CO2 or compressed-gas (HPA or Nitrogen) powered paintball gun (or marker).

Rules for playing paintball vary widely. The most common form involves two opposing teams seeking to capture their opponent's flag and return it to their starting position, but other objectives may include eliminating all of the other team's players, eliminating a specific player, defending or attacking a particular point or area, or capturing objects of interest hidden in the playing area. Depending on the style of paintball played, a game can last from seconds to hours.

  • Temples (Wat)   ( 7 Articles )

There are more than 20 temples around the island. Well behaved visitors are welcome! Temples are the center of the Thai community.

When visiting temples, please respect the Buddhist and Thai culture! Always wear a shirt that covers your shoulders, shorts are ok (but not too short!, no shoes or headwear inside the temples - never point your feed at any Thais, especially a monk and never touch the head of a Thai either.

Kayaking is a popular pursuit here with many resorts renting out kayaks and paddles if you want to take a scenic trip under your own steam; the tides around the island are generally not strong making it a perfect for this type of activity.
